da Volterra Werkstatt stellt sich die Aufgabe, auf dem kulturellen Reichtum Volterras aufzubauen und diesen als Potenzial für neue Arbeiten aus den Bereichen Kunst, Kunsthandwerk und Design fruchtbar zu machen.
Organisiert werden interdisziplinäre Workshops zu Entwurf und Gestaltung von Schmuckstücken, Gebrauchsgegenständen und skulpturalen Objekten, die durch die Schönheit des Materials und der Form begeistern. International renommierte wie am Beginn ihres Schaffens stehende Künstler, Kunsthandwerker und Designer, die Wissen, Können und Enthusiasmus einbringen wollen, werden zur Teilnahme an den Workshops eingeladen. Kreativität und Experimentierfreude, Offenheit und Internationalität bestimmen die Arbeit und das Ambiente.
da Volterra Werkstatt geht von Lebendigkeit, Motivreichtum und Formensprache der etruskischen Kunst aus, die sich in orientalisierenden, archaischen, klassischen und hellenistischen Phasen auf jeweils eigene Art ausgeformt hat. Gearbeitet wird vorzüglich mit Materialien, in denen Volterraner und toskanische Traditionen verankert sind. Dazu zählen in erster Linie Metalle, Tonminerale, Stein, Holz, Pyrit und Alabaster. Genutzt werden in Volterra vorhandene traditionelle Strukturen wie die Laboratorien des Liceo artistico oder handwerklicher Betriebe. In Auslotung des Spannungsfeldes zwischen dem Überlieferten und den heutigen Bedürfnissen werden neue Formen entwickelt und Objekte gestaltet.
Unter dem Label „da Volterra Werkstatt“ entstehen Unikate bzw. limitierte und vom Künstler signierte Editionen.
da Volterra Werkstatt arbeitet in Austausch und Partnerschaft mit nationalen und internationalen Instituten.
Ziel unserer Unternehmung ist es, in Volterra eine freie, kreative, künstlerische Werkstatt aufzubauen, die qualitative Beispiele setzt und auch andere zum Schaffen motiviert. Wir wollen auf Dauer Absolventen des Volterraner Liceo Artistico in die künstlerische Arbeit einbeziehen und ihnen Möglichkeiten und Kontakte schaffen. Das wird seine Zeit dauern – aber: der Anfang ist gemacht.
Acht internationale Künstler mit sehr unterschiedlichen Ansätzen haben wir in diesem Jahr eingeladen, um mit uns das Pilotprojekt zu starten. Was sie verbindet: alle kennen und lieben Volterra.
“Isabella“, schreibt D’Annunzio in Forse che sì forse che no, „reiste wohl zu jener Stunde gen Volterra, durchquerte die Kreten des Valdera, die kargen Biancane; hinter einer kreidigen Anhöhe erschien unvermittelt hoch auf dem Kamm des Berges, als ruhte sie auf dem Saum eines der Kreise Dantes, die langgestreckte mauer- und turmbewehrte Silhouette, die Stadt des Windes und der Felsen.” Volterra, das etruskische „Velàthri“, ein Mythos, wurde seit dem 7. Jahrhundert zu einer der wichtigsten Städte des etruskischen Zwölfstädtebundes. Es liegt auf einem 555 Meter hohen Bergrücken zwischen dem Val di Cecina und dem Val d‘Era in einer spektakulären, an Bodenschätzen reichen Landschaft. Von der Stadtmauer reicht der Blick im Norden über Pisa zu den Apuanischen Alpen, in der Ferne die Marmorbrüche von Carrara, im Osten bis ins Chianti-Gebiet, im Westen auf das Tyrrhenische Meer, bis zu den Bergen Korsikas, im Süden über die Colline metallifere in die Maremma. In den metallhaltigen Hügeln bauten schon die Etrusker Eisenerz, Kupfer und Silber ab. Rund um Volterra wurde Alabaster gefördert. Im etruskischen Museum von Volterra, der Sammlung Guarnacci, findet sich heute eine der bedeutendsten Sammlungen etruskischer Gebrauchsgegenstände, Urnen, Schmuckstücke und Skulpturen, vom Neolithikum bis zur Römischen Zeit. Volterra ist eine ebenso resistente wie renitente Stadt. Der Lehmboden und jahrhundertelange Erosionen haben ihre Ausdehnung den Berg hinunter verhindert. So blieb Volterra durch die geologischen Bedingungen auf sich und seine Geschichte verwiesen. Es finden sich etruskische und römische Reste, die Struktur der mittelalterlichen Stadt ist erhalten. Volterra, das sich wie keine andere Stadt zu seiner etruskischen Herkunft bekennt, ist einer der eigensten und kulturell eindrücklichsten Orte in der Toskana. D. H. Lawrence bemerkt zu Volterra: „…it gets all the wind and sees all the world.“

On a common initiative of the lawyer Dirk Oelbermann and us as well as in partnership with italian and german experts from art and design da Volterra Werkstatt came to live in March 2014 promoting and developing concepts and objects in the field of art, craft and design.
da Volterra Werkstatt aims to build on the cultural wealth of Volterra and on its potential for developing new works of art, craft and design. For that purpose da Volterra Werkstatt is organising interdisciplinary workshops for the creation of sculptures, jewellery and objects of daily use that enchant by the sheer beauty of material and design. Internationally renowned artists, craftsmen and designers, as well as some at the beginning of their career are invited to share their knowledge, ability and enthusiasm in a series of workshops. The working atmosphere will be characterised by creativity and love of experimentation, by openness and internationality.
da Volterra Werkstatt starts from the vitality, the thematic richness and the design vocabulary of the Etruscan art which has shaped itself in special ways, from the ‘orientalisation’ to the Hellenistic Age, from the Archaic to the Classical one. The principal working materials are those in which Volterranean and Tuscan tradition are rooted, first of all metals, clay minerals, stone, wood, pyrite and alabaster. Traditional premises based in Volterra, like the laboratories of the Liceo artistico and craftsmen’s establishments will be used for work. The idea is to develop new objects and forms that bridge the polarity of tradition and contemporary trends.
With the label „da Volterra Werkstatt“ there will be created unique objects as well as strictly limited editions signed by the atrists.
A committee of specialists advises on the choice of the artists and designers and establishes contacts with institutions, experts, makers, manufacturers and customers.
da Volterra Werkstatt collaborates with national and international partners and organisations.
With our initiative we aim to settle a free, creative and artistic workshop in Volterra that gives examples of quality and motivates others for creation. In the length of time we want to integrate the students of the volterranean Liceo Artistico into the artistic work giving them possibilities for training and connecting them with international artists and designers. It will take time, but: the first step is made.
Eight international artists with very different backgrounds are invited this year to start the pilot project with us. Their common ground: all know and love Volterra.
“Isabella”, wrote D’Annunzio in Forse che sì forse che no, “maybe in that hour travelled to Volterra, passing the Crete of the Valdera, passing the barren Biancane; behind a cretaceous hill suddenly appeared on the ridge of the mountain, as if situated on the edge of one of Dante’s circles, the strung-out silhouette of walls and towers, the town of wind and rocks.” Since the 7th century BC Volterra, known to the Etruscans as „Velàthri“, became one of the most important places of the Etruscan League of Twelve Cities. Located on the back of a 555 meter high mountain, between the valleys of the rivers Cecina and Era, it overlooks a spectacular landscape: northbound all the way to the Apian Alps, passing Pisa, in the distance the marble quarries of Carrara, in the east nearly reaching the Chianti region, in the west looking onto the Tyrrhenian Sea, with the mountain range of Corsica at the horizon, and in the south to the “Colline metallifere”. Here, in the ‘metalliferous hills‘, copper and silver were already mined by the Etruscans. Now the area is famous for its local alabaster. The Guarnacci Museum of Volterra exhibits a fine collection of Etruscan antiquities, some of which are the most important in existence today: objects of daily use, cinerary urns, sculptures and pieces of jewellery, from the Neolithic to the Roman Age. Volterra is as resistant as renitent. Its wider expanse down the mountain was mainly obstructed by the loamy soil and by centuries-long erosions. Therefore, owed to geological conditions, Volterra has always been referred to itself and to its history. There are marvellous Etruscan and Roman relics while the structure of the Medieval City is completely preserved. Rooted in its Etruscan origins, Volterra is one of the most independent and cultural impressive places in Tuscany. D. H. Lawrence remarks: „…it gets all wind and sees all the world.“

Lo splendido patrimonio di Volterra, giunto fino a noi attraverso i secoli, non può e non deve andare perduto. da Volterra Werkstatt nasce con lo scopo di valorizzare le ricchezze presenti sul territorio, con la creazione di nuove opere d’arte, d’artigianato e design. Per questo motivo organizza workshops interdisciplinari per la progettazione e la creazione di sculture, gioielli, oggetti per l’uso quotidiano e per l’arredamento, che siano in grado di sorprendere per la bellezza del materiale e della forma.
A questi laboratori sono invitati a partecipare artisti, artigiani, designer internazionali già affermati o all’inizio della loro carriera: il requisito essenziale è la voglia di mettere a disposizione del progetto le proprie conoscenze e abilità, con il massimo dell’entusiasmo. Creatività, desiderio di sperimentare, cordialità e internazionalità: queste saranno le caratteristiche degli ambienti e dei gruppi di lavoro.
da Volterra Werkstatt parte dalla vitalità, dalla ricchezza di linguaggio e di motivi dell’arte etrusca, che si rivela sempre nuova e sorprendente nelle svariate sfaccettature determinate dalle fasi storiche che essa ha attraversato, da quella orientalistica a quella ellenista, passando per quella arcaica e quella classica. All’interno dei workshop si lavorerà con i materiali ai quali si collega la storia di Volterra come quella della Toscana, ovvero metalli, argille, pietre, legno, pirite e alabastro. Inoltre i workshop avranno luogo in ambienti altrettanto significativi per Volterra, come i laboratori del Liceo Artistico o le botteghe artigianali disponibili. Tramite ricerche ed analisi approfondite, scavando fra la tradizione e le nostre esigenze odierne, verranno creati oggetti unici come edizioni limitati e firmati dagli artisti: con il label „da Volterra Werkstatt“.
Un comitato di esperti avrà il compito di stabilire contatti con istituzioni, specialisti, produttori e acquirenti. Studenti del Liceo Artistico di Volterra avranno la possibilità di affiancare gli artisti nel loro lavoro.

“Isabella forse in quell’ora viaggiava per Volterra, a traverso le crete della Valdera, a traverso le biancane sterili; vedeva di là dalla collina gessosa riapparire all’improvviso su la sommità del monte come su l’orlo d’un girone dantesco il lungo lineamento murato e turrito, la città di vento e di macigno.” Così D’Annunzio descrive l’arrivo a Volterra di Isabella, la protagonista di “Forse che sì forse che no”; e questa può essere anche adesso l’impressione di chi sale per la prima volta sul colle volterrano. In qualunque angolo del centro storico si respira un’aria magica: tanti edifici testimoniano l’importanza che Volterra ha avuto nei secoli; ovunque si possono cogliere le impronte dei popoli che si sono succeduti nella città. Sappiamo con certezza che Volterra era già abitata nel periodo del neolitico; poi divenne una delle città più importanti della dodecapoli etrusca, conosciuta con il nome di Velathri; ci sono poi importanti testimonianze di epoca romana tra le quali, ad esempio, il famoso Teatro Romano; e infine la cinta muraria con ancora due porte etrusche, le chiese e gli edifici risalenti all’età medievale. Già all’epoca degli Etruschi erano ben noti i giacimenti minerari delle Colline Metallifere per l’estrazione di ferro, rame e argento. Questi – insieme alla pietra caratteristica di Volterra, l’alabastro – furono alla base per la realizzazione di urne, sculture, gioielli e oggetti d’uso quotidiano, che oggi sono conservati al Museo Etrusco Guarnacci. Volterra, arroccata sul suo colle alto 555 metri, in mezzo alla Val di Cecina e alla Val d’Era in un paesaggio spettacolare, custodisce questi tesori e i suoi tremila anni di storia, rivelandosi così una delle città più caratteristiche e più belle di tutta la Toscana. Come la descrive D. H. Lawrence: „…it gets all the wind and sees all the world.“
